Showbox - Movies HD & TV show
Showbox is an online cinema theatre where you can watch most of the latest movies and some classic titles. Surprisingly, it’s free, though stuffed with ads, and easy to use, though tricky to install. All in all, it makes a good pocket cinema theatre.
All you need to start searching is either to enter the name or its fragment into the field or just browse through virtual shelves. I found some good series like this, judging by posters and descriptions. The new titles are highlighted, with notifications within the app. They can be either complete new movies or seasons or just new episodes of ongoing shows. Special sections feature trailers and news. You can also star some title as Favorite and return to it later.
When it comes to watching, the app offers but a basic video player, with a search bar and a play/stop button. It offers no subtitles or alternative audios to select; just the basic core video. Gestures we use to control volume or brightness in other players don’t work here either.
All the movies and shows are only available in the original language; it’s mostly English, and if it contains scenes voiced in other languages, from Spanish to Na’Vi, the English subtitles are forced.
Ease of Use
The most complicated is the installation of Showbox. You won’t find it on Google Play Store; the official Showbox site offers you an APK, but don’t be surprised to find an Aptoide icon on your home screen instead of what you hoped for.
That’s okay, though. Aptoide is an alternative app store (maybe Huawei users will find it more necessary than others, since Google is to drop its support for new devices, but others may benefit from it too). In it, you can find Showbox and install it the way you usually install third-party apps. Then it all gets as easy as it is with, say, Netflix, except for subscription that’s not necessary. Though both the store and the player app lack features, it makes controlling the app even easier.
Showbox looks just like any regular movie store. In each section, whether you’re searching for movies, news stories, TV shows. When you’re watching a video, the entire screen is given to it (unless its geometry differs from your device’s display).
Showbox is free, as well as the store you download it from. But the app is heavily ad-supported, so you’ll see a commercial before each video you load.
- Lots of videos and TV shows;
- Extremely easy to use when installing;
- Caching for offline viewing supported, with advanced options;
- Decent quality, though not perfect.
- Downloading and installing it is a bit tricky;
- Lots of ads between movies;
- The videos lack subtitles and extra audio tracks;
- The content may be distributed illegally (if you care).
Showbox is a good theatre if you want free access to a huge library of movies and shows. It’s not clear whether it’s legal; on the other hand, it’s not prohibited. Its player may lack control features, but it’s easy to use and quick to stream.
